Cosco is warning customers of port congestion in Germany, Netherlands, and Belgium. The container carrier has introduced a fee per container, which will apply to sailings to and from Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Wilhelmshaven, Rotterdam, and Antwerp. “The current handling situation in the ports and the availability of infrastructure are leading to considerable restrictions,” Cosco said, adding that no improvement is expected in the near term.
Several key ports are congested because container carriers have rescheduled sailings due to threats of attacks by the Houthi militants on ships sailing through the Red Sea. Consequently, fewer port calls have resulted in port congestion and delays.
Meanwhile, CMA CGM is adding extra capacity on routes from China to Europe for the summer peak season. The carrier will deploy seven additional 7,000-TEU vessels on the China to Northern Europe and Mediterranean routes.
