Shipping in the Red Sea remains uncertain, despite a slight rise in traffic. Security concerns are still keeping most vessels on longer routes around Africa. Although no merchant ships have been attacked this year, threats persist as Yemen’s Houthis warn they may resume attacks on vessels should the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas collapse.
The European Union has decided to extend its maritime security operation in the Red Sea region until February 28, 2026. Over €17m ($17.8m) has been allocated for the naval operation, known as EUNAVFOR Aspides.
Most shipowners continue avoiding the region with CMA CGM as the exception. The ocean carrier has announced a new service from India into the Red Sea in collaboration with Saudi-based Folk Maritime and Oman-based Asyad Shipping.
Over 100 merchant ships have been attacked in the past 15 months, forcing diversions that have added two weeks to Asia-Europe sailing times and increased TEU-mile demand by 17.2% in 2024.
