CMA CGM is on track to become the world’s second-largest container carrier and will surpass Maersk by 2027, according to analysis from Alphaliner, shared via reporting on the platform X. The French carrier has recorded the fastest fleet growth among the top ten container carriers in the first half of 2026, with an orderbook that has exceeded MSC’s in the same period.
This growth strategy is different than Maersk’s approach. As reported by splash247, Maersk continues to prioritize disciplined fleet management while advancing its integrated logistics model. CMA CGM’s strategy, by comparison, involves developing its logistics business.
A key element of CMA CGM’s strategy is the planned acquisition of FedEx Supply Chain, valued at $1.4billion, according to reporting from the American Journal of Transportation. The transaction would significantly expand CMA CGM’s contract logistics footprint in North America, covering warehousing, air freight, and inland transport. According to Air Cargo News, the companies plan to establish multi-year commercial partnerships in both air and ocean freight as part of the deal.
CMA CGM’s leadership is confident in long-term trade fundamentals. As reported by The Loadstar, this outlook continues to support the group’s investment in new vessel capacity.
Current Alphaliner rankings, cited by splash247, place MSC as the world’s largest container line with approximately 7.3 million TEU of capacity, followed by Maersk at around 4.7 million TEU and CMA CGM at around 4.39 million TEU.
